Moving Day Must-Haves

Moving Day Must-Haves: Essential Products for a Smooth Transition

After moving houses 4 times, and a total of 12 moves due to ongoing construction, we’ve learned firsthand how stressful and exhausting the process can be. Moving can be both exciting and overwhelming, but having the right tools, products, and support can make a world of difference. One of the best decisions we made was hiring professional movers this time around. It’s a splurge, but it doesn’t have to break the bank, and honestly, it was life changing.

We highly recommend using Macs Moving and Storage out of Lake Geneva. Their team made our most recent move smooth, efficient, and far less stressful than doing it all ourselves.

Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, here’s a rundown of must-have items, and helpful tips, to make your moving day as stress free as possible.

1. Blue Painters Tape

Why You Need It: Blue painters tape is an unsung hero in the moving process. Unlike regular masking tape, it’s designed to peel off easily without leaving sticky residue behind. Use it to label boxes, mark rooms, or even protect surfaces during the move. It’s also great for creating a color-coded system for different rooms or types of items, making unpacking a breeze.

2. Pack of Sharpies

Why You Need It: Sharpies are indispensable for labeling. Grab a pack in various colors to easily identify what’s in each box and which room it belongs to. This will save you time and frustration when you’re unpacking and trying to find that one box with your essentials. Consider using different colors for different rooms or types of items for added clarity.

3. Wardrobe Boxes

Why You Need Them: Wardrobe boxes are a game-changer for keeping your clothes organized and wrinkle-free. These boxes come with a built-in hanging rod, allowing you to transfer clothes directly from your closet to the box without taking them off their hangers. This not only saves you time but also ensures that your clothes arrive in the same condition they left in.

4. Lowe’s Boxes for Delivery

Why You Need Them: Sturdy and reliable, Lowe’s boxes are perfect for packing up your belongings safely. They come in a variety of sizes to accommodate different types of items, from small knick-knacks to large appliances. Make sure to get a range of sizes and types, including medium, large, and heavy-duty boxes for those heavier items.

5. Goo Gone (or Goo Off)

Why You Need It: Goo Gone, or Goo Off, is essential for removing sticky residue left behind from labels and tape. After you’ve unpacked and are ready to clean up, this product will help you remove any stubborn residue on surfaces or old boxes. It’s also useful for cleaning up after the move, ensuring your new home is spotless.

6. Packing Paper and Bubble Wrap

Why You Need Them: Protect fragile items with packing paper and bubble wrap. These materials provide cushioning and prevent breakage. Wrap delicate items like glassware and electronics in bubble wrap and use packing paper to fill any empty spaces in boxes to minimize movement and potential damage during transit.

7. Moving Blankets

Why You Need Them: Moving blankets are invaluable for protecting furniture and other large items. Drape them over your furniture to guard against scratches, dents, and dirt during the move. They’re also useful for cushioning and stabilizing items in the moving truck.

8. Tool Kit

Why You Need It: A basic tool kit with screwdrivers, pliers, and a hammer can come in handy for disassembling and reassembling furniture. Having these tools readily available can save you time and avoid unnecessary frustration when setting up your new space.

9. Trash Bags

Why You Need Them: Keep trash bags handy for any packing material you need to discard, as well as for quick clean-ups. They’re also useful for packing up items you don’t want to take with you but need to dispose of.

10. First Aid Kit

Why You Need It: Accidents can happen during a move, so it’s wise to have a first aid kit on hand. This ensures that you’re prepared for any minor injuries or mishaps that may occur while packing, lifting, or unpacking.

With the right products, and the right help, you’ll be well-prepared for a smooth and efficient move. These essentials will keep your belongings organized and protected, helping you settle into your new space with less stress. Trust us, a few smart choices (like hiring reliable movers!) can make all the difference. Happy moving!

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, I lit a candle on my kitchen counter, not for the scent, but for the comfort. The sky was gray, dishes were drying in the rack, and I still had emails to answer. But in that moment, something shifted. The soft glow, the warm scent of bergamot and cedar, made […]

Most people think updating their home means tearing it apart. New floors, new furniture, massive bills. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to start from scratch to fall in love with your space again. Sometimes, the smallest swaps, a new sconce here, a better rug there, can create the biggest impact. Simple Swaps Hardware […]

A few years ago, I walked into a new client’s home, a two-story colonial in a great neighborhood, with great bones… and a kitchen straight out of 2004. Think cherry cabinets, speckled granite, orange stained floors, and brushed nickel hardware trying its best to hold the decade together. “I know it’s dated,” she said with […]
