Wallpaper Done Right

How to Make Wallpaper Look Custom (Because It Should)

A few years ago, I walked into a powder room that stopped me in my tracks, not because of what was in it, but because of what wasn’t. No visible vent cover, no glaring white light switches. Just an enveloping, botanical wallpaper that wrapped the walls like a custom dress. It felt immersive, elegant, and… expensive.

But here’s the secret: it wasn’t just the wallpaper itself, it was the installation that made it magical.

When it comes to wall coverings, the material you choose is only half the story. The other half is how it’s applied. Whether you’re working with grasscloth, printed vinyl, or custom murals, the difference between “wow” and “why did I do this” comes down to craftsmanship, and details.

Here’s your designer approved guide to doing wallpaper right, from seamless installations to where we love to source.

Why Installation Matters (A Lot)

Wallpaper can be transformative, but only if it’s handled with precision, especially around corners, curves, and architectural details.

An excellent installer doesn’t just stick and smooth. They’re part artist, part magician. Here’s what to look for in a true professional:

  • Corners: A skilled wallpaper hanger knows that turning a corner cleanly is tricky, especially with bold patterns or murals. The best pros will either:
    • Use excess paper scraps to create a perfect match piece-by-piece, or
    • Hand-paint sections to bridge pattern gaps, especially with custom or irregular prints.
  • Seamless Look: Want that fully wrapped, gallery level finish? Don’t stop at the walls.
    • Light switch plates and vent covers should be wrapped in wallpaper too. It’s a subtle trick that makes everything feel custom and cohesive.
    • Even thermostats or intercom panels can sometimes be blended in (or relocated entirely).

Designer Tips for a Seamless Wallpaper Installation

  1. Plan ahead: Order extra paper. You’ll need overage for pattern repeat, miscuts, and detail work (like wrapping corners or switch plates).
  2. Don’t DIY the tricky stuff: If your space has sloped ceilings, built-ins, or funky angles, hire a professional. Wallpapering isn’t the place to experiment with your own learning curve.
  3. Think beyond accent walls: Full rooms, even ceilings, feel more immersive and elevated. In small spaces (like powder rooms or hallways), all over paper makes a huge impact.

Where We Love to Source Wallpaper

If you’re ready to dive in, here’s one of our go-to wallpaper brands:

Boråstapeter

Swedish design meets timeless beauty. Their patterns feel both classic and fresh, from delicate florals to rich botanicals. We especially love their subtle textures and the ease of application, the quality print makes clean seams and smooth installs much more achievable.

Schumacher

A heritage brand with serious design chops. Schumacher’s wallpapers range from iconic classics to modern collaborations, often with bold colors, layered prints, and unexpected details. If you’re going for high-style impact, this is the brand to explore.

House of Hackney

Maximalist, moody, and unapologetically bold. Known for dark florals, animal motifs, and British eccentricity, House of Hackney is perfect when you want the walls to make a statement. These are showstopping prints that demand attention, in the best way.

Holly Hunt

Refined and luxurious, Holly Hunt wallcoverings often lean minimalist but rich in texture. Think silk, grasscloth, and architectural patterning. Ideal for sophisticated spaces that call for restraint but still want a “designed” feel.

Other favorites include:

  • Farrow & Ball – Elevated, rich in pigment, pairs beautifully with their paint palette.
  • Cole & Son – Artistic, bold, and full of character.
  • Wallshoppe – Playful prints, great for kids’ rooms and creative spaces.

Final Thoughts

Wallpaper Is Worth the Effort

Wall coverings bring depth, story, and emotion to a space in ways paint alone can’t. But to make it sing, the details matter.

Find the right paper, hire the right installer, and don’t forget the corners, switches, and vents, they’re the quiet heroes of a seamless look.

Because in great design, the difference is always in what you don’t notice.

Most people think updating their home means tearing it apart. New floors, new furniture, massive bills. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to start from scratch to fall in love with your space again. Sometimes, the smallest swaps, a new sconce here, a better rug there, can create the biggest impact. A few years ago, I walked into a new client’s home, a two-story colonial in a great neighborhood, with great bones… and a kitchen straight out of 2004. Think cherry cabinets, speckled granite, orange stained floors, and brushed nickel hardware trying its best to hold the decade together. “I know it’s dated,” she said with […]

I’ll never forget standing in a client’s freshly painted foyer as the late afternoon sun poured in, only to realize the walls looked completely different than they had that morning. Not only was the white warmer than expected, but the light was bouncing off the walls like a spotlight at a fashion show. The culprit? […]
